Preparing For Your Microsuction Ear Wax Removal Appointment

A guide to preparing you or your child for a microsuction appointment with North London Earwax Clinic.

If your ears feel blocked, or full, or you’re experiencing uncomfortable sensations, you might be recommended microsuction. The technique uses a microscope and a gentle suction tube to remove excess earwax from the canal. But how should you prepare for the appointment to ensure your desired outcomes are achieved?

Softening Your Earwax

Because microsuction uses a gentle suction tube to remove the wax, it is done most effectively when earwax is soft. Using eardrops to soften the earwax a few days ahead of your appointment will facilitate the procedure.

What Eardrops Should I Use?

To safely soften earwax before your appointment, we recommend using one of the following:

  • Medical-grade olive oil
  • Medical-grade almond oil (please do not use if you have a nut allergy)
  • Sodium bicarbonate eardrops

If you’re still unsure about what to use to soften your earwax, feel free to get in touch with our audiologists, who will be happy to advise.

Please do not use general household oils that aren’t listed above, and avoid using eardrops if you have an ear infection or perforated eardrum.

How Do You Properly Use Eardrops?

To administer your eardrops, simply lie on your side (working with one ear at a time to avoid mess!) and pull your ear up and back as you administer the eardrops. This ensures that the liquid reaches the bottom of the canal.

After administering the eardrops, make sure to lay on your side for at least 2 minutes, to allow the oil to move through your ear canal.

Top tip: Massage the entrance to your ear canal after administering the drops, as this encourages the liquid to move further into your ear.

When Should You Not Use Eardrops?

Generally, eardrops of most kinds are safe to use as long as your eardrum is intact. If you have a perforated eardrum or an ear infection, do not under any circumstances use eardrops. This will only worsen the pain and potentially cause inflammation in the middle ear. If you are not sure whether your eardrum is damaged or not, it’s best to stay away from eardrops until told otherwise and consult your GP.

Preparing Your Child For Ear Wax Microsuction

Microsuction is one of the safest earwax removal techniques available today, and it’s particularly useful for children over six years of age who are experiencing blockages or pain. Microsuction can be performed within 30 minutes, which is great for kids who may not enjoy sitting still for long periods of time! However, to ensure the procedure goes smoothly, your child must remain calm and still for our medical professionals to carry out the wax removal.

Our qualified Paediatric Audiologist, Zahrah Jaunmahomed, has years of experience working with children and young adults. We are equipped to put your little ones at ease in a calm and empathetic manner and we sometimes use distraction tools such as screens and sensory toys to help the child remain still.

Tips For Keeping Your Child Calm

Below we’ve outlined some of our top tips that you can follow as a guardian, to help the procedure go quickly and smoothly:

  • Talk to them before the visit, and make sure they feel familiar with what’s about to happen – their biggest fear is often the unknown!
  • Reassure them that the procedure won’t hurt or feel uncomfortable
  • Validate their feelings if they are worried or scared, and empathise with them
  • Bring in distractions, whether that be a toy, music, or a video on an iPad
  • Offer comfort by holding their hand, or have your child sit on your knee during ear wax removal.
  • Consider offering your child a treat a the end of their appointment, so they look forward to getting through the treatment.

Does the Microsuction Procedure Differ For Children?

Generally, the microsuction procedure is the same for both children and adults. Both use an oto-endoscope specifically designed to provide a clear view of the ear canal, with a bright light and high-definition camera, while earwax is removed through a gentle suction.

Due to the smaller size of a child’s ear canal, appointments with us might take slightly longer than a typical visit, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. As mentioned above, a child’s appointment may include the use of sensory toys or screens to keep your child distracted (and still!).

What Happens During the Appointment?

Our endoscopic microsuction service focuses on meeting the needs of the adults and children who visit our clinic. We’ll complete a few steps before, during, and after the appointment to ensure the effective removal of the earwax. Here’s what you should expect:

What Happens If No Earwax Is Found?
