Why Do Children Require Ear Wax Removal?

A child’s ear should naturally produce and shed earwax. Earwax helps to clean our ears by migrating from the middle ear to the outer ear. However, if an ear canal becomes blocked up with wax, this may cause a disruption to this migration and cause further wax to be built up.. Other symptoms that indicate excessive wax buildup include itchiness, difficulty hearing, pain and ringing in ears.

As their ear canals are so small and narrow (particularly in young children), attempting to remove this earwax from your child’s ear at home could potentially cause further damage. For example, using cotton buds or fingers to try and clean the canal could push the wax further down and in turn could rupture a child’s eardrum. This is where microsuction comes in. As a safe and painless way of removing wax build up, any discomfort caused by earwax can be successfully alleviated with microsuction treatment.

What Does Kids Earwax Microsuction Involve?

Our children’s endoscopic microsuction focuses on meeting the needs of children who visit our clinic. The ear canal of children is usually smaller, which means that earwax microsuction for kids requires more precision and patience. With children, there may be less compliance in removing the earwax. As our Audiologists are skilled in working with children on a regular basis, we are able to reassure and put your little ones at ease in a calm and empathetic manner. We sometimes use distraction tools such as screens and sensory toys to help the child remain calm and still.

What to Expect from your child’s Microsuction Appointment:

Ear health history assessment

Formal consent from a parent or legal guardian

Examination of your child’s ear pre- and post-wax removal

Gentle removal of the earwax using fine tools and a suction tube

Before and after photo of the eardrum using the iCLEARScope®

Covid safety precautions taken at all times

Frequently Asked Questions

It may be hard to tell if your child is having a problem with excessive ear wax since you aren’t experiencing it yourself. If your child has an excessive amount of wax within their ear canal, they may experience:

  • Hearing loss
  • Earache
  • A ‘full’ feeling within the ear canal
  • Dizziness or ringing in the ears

Watch out for your child showing signs of ear pain, which could look like visible discomfort, tugging at the ear, or verbally complaining about feeling uncomfortable. If your child is experiencing symptoms, please don’t attempt to remove the wax yourself with a finger or cotton bud, as this may push the wax further into the canal.

If your child has an excessive amount of earwax, causing blockages and other issues, you should contact a professional audiologist. You mustn't attempt to use a cotton bud or other similar tools to get it out yourself, as this may push wax further into the eardrum. Professionals will use techniques such as wax dissolving ear drops and endoscopic microsuction to safely remove ear wax from your child's ear.

Endoscopic microsuction uses gentle suction to pull out earwax and remove earwax from the ears. Using an endoscope means that we target wax precisely, without irritating or creating pain in the ear canal or eardrum.
Due to the suction being so gentle, it causes minimal discomfort, making it a great ear wax removal option for children. Microsuction can be performed within 30 minutes, which is great for kids who may not enjoy sitting still for long periods of time! Find out more about the endoscopic microsuction earwax removal procedure here.

Microsuction is a procedure that can be done as often as is needed, and some patients may need microsuction done every three to six months. The frequency at which your child may need earwax removal will be determined by our audiologists, on a case-by-case basis.

When a buildup of wax occurs in the ear, this can create the sensation that the ear is full, or that a solid object is stuck in the ear canal. This in turn can reduce your child’s hearing and make sounds appear muffled. Children’s ear wax removal uses microsuction to solve this problem by removing the buildup of wax and restoring a normal hearing capability. If hearing loss persists after earwax removal, you may wish to consult your doctor.

Here at North London Earwax Clinic, we perform earwax removal for kids as young as six years old.
