How Excessive Ear Wax Can Affect Your Child's Hearing

A build-up of excess ear wax can be extremely uncomfortable and painful for children. Excess ear wax can have a number of effects on your child’s ear health and hearing, especially when not properly treated. In this article, we’re going to discuss the main effects that excess ear wax can have on your children’s hearing and how our experts at North London Ear Wax Clinic can help.

So, how can excess ear wax affect your child’s hearing? If your child is experiencing an excess build-up of ear wax then they may experience symptoms such as itchiness, earache, tinnitus, vertigo and, in some cases, partial hearing loss. An excess amount of ear wax can be uncomfortable and even painful when left untreated so it’s important to know the symptoms to look for in your child to prevent this.

Can Ear Wax Affect a Child's Hearing?

Yes, a build-up of ear wax in children can cause a lot of uncomfortable symptoms and in some cases, the blockage may affect a child’s hearing, causing tinnitus or temporary hearing loss. This is because the build-up of ear wax can cause a blockage in the ear canal which stops sound from being able to reach the inner ear, causing what is known as conductive hearing loss.

However, it is important to note that not all ear wax is bad. Ear wax is a natural way to create a barrier between the eardrum and the natural world. It helps to protect against infections that may enter our ears through foreign objects such as dust and dirt, and also helps to keep the ear canal moisturised to prevent dryness and itching. It is only when the body produces an excessive amount of earwax that causes uncomfortable symptoms that the earwax may need to be addressed or removed.

How Do I Know If My Child Has Excess Ear Wax Build Up?

It’s important to look for these symptoms in your children to see if they are experiencing hearing loss but we understand that it can be difficult to spot the signs, especially if your child is younger or nonverbal. Some of the symptoms of ear wax built-up in children may look like this:

  • Not responding when you call their name, having trouble hearing sounds at a normal level on the television, tablet, radio, etc. and needing to turn it up.
  • Constantly asking your or others to speak louder or slower so they can hear you better.
  • Poor concentration when doing normal tasks. This could be a sign that they are experiencing tinnitus or hearing loss as they may be concentrating on this instead.
  • Tugging on their ears or otherwise showing discomfort, as an excess build-up of ear wax can be extremely uncomfortable.
  • Mispronouncing words or muffled speech.

If you notice any of these symptoms it is important to contact a medical specialist so that your child can be diagnosed and given the right course of treatment to help relieve these symptoms.

Are Ear Wax and Glue Ear The Same Thing?

One of the biggest misconceptions about an excess build-up of ear wax is that it causes glue ears in children. Glue ear occurs when the middle part of the ear, which is filled with air becomes filled with fluid. This can cause symptoms which are similar to those of ear wax build-up, such as:

  • Earache or Discomfort – Pulling or tugging on the ears.
  • Hearing loss – difficulty hearing sounds at a normal volume or hearing people, especially with a lot of background noise.
  • Tinnitus (Buzzing or Ringing in the Ears

Although these are also common symptoms of excess ear wax, the two conditions are in no way connected. Glue ear is caused by a multitude of things, including head colds, ear infections, narrow eustachian tubes and allergies, but ear wax is not one of them. This is why it’s important to visit a specialist if your child is experiencing any of these symptoms so they can advise you on the best course of action with the correct diagnosis.

How Do I Get Rid of Excess Ear Wax in My Child?

Once you are sure that your child has excess ear wax, it is important to remove it as soon as possible to help relieve the symptoms.

It is important to avoid at-home methods of ear wax removal, as they can actually cause more harm than good, this includes using items such as earbuds. By poking inside the ear, the impacted ear wax may be pushed further inside the ear canal, which can worsen the symptoms the child is already experiencing.

We recommend the use of endoscopic microsuction, where audiologists are trained to use a specialised ear suction tube and a small camera to see inside the ear and carefully dislodge and remove excess ear wax from the ear canal and relieve symptoms. Microsuction is one of the easiest and most effective ear wax removal techniques used by audiologists, as it gives them a clearer view of the ear canal.
