Looking after your ear health should be a crucial part of your everyday routine, from avoiding cotton buds to reducing the amount of loud music you listen to. However, despite everything you may do to prevent an ear infection, it’s good to be aware of the signs and symptoms of one just in case. In this blog, our audiologist experts discuss some of the most common symptoms that you may have with an ear infection.
So, what are the symptoms of an ear infection in adults? Ear infections can manifest themselves in a number of different ways depending on the individual. Some of the most common symptoms include:
Read on to find out more about symptoms of ear infections in adults, how to spot them and what you need to do about them.
No two ear infections are the same and they will present themselves differently depending on the health of the person in question and the severity of the infection. We’ve highlighted in more detail below some of the most common symptoms an adult may potentially experience due to an ear infection. .
Earache is typically the most common symptom that an adult will experience when dealing with some form of ear infection. This pain can either be constant or sharp bursts of pain that may feel like either a dull or burning sensation.
Hearing loss can be either selective or total depending on the infection that is causing it. More significant hearing loss is typically caused by a build-up of fluid in the middle ear, preventing noise from entering the ear through vibrations.
A feeling of fullness or pressure is another common symptom of an ear infection.
This symptom, however could also be a sign of a build-up of ear wax which is creating a full feeling. To find out more about the symptoms of too much ear wax why not check out our recent blog?
It is reported that an ear infection in adults can cause high temperatures of anything from 38 C to 40 C. An ear infection can cause either a constant high temperature or cause you to feel shivery or hot at intermittent periods.
When looking at this symptom it’s important to look at the type of discharge that is coming out of your ear, such as the colour and texture as it could just be an excessive amount of wax. If the discharge is yellow, white or bloody and has a potent odour, it typically means there is an infection due to a tear in the ear drum.
It’s important to know that ear infections can be grouped into three different categories: inner ear infection, middle ear infection and outer ear infection (Otitis Externa). Although some symptoms are more commonly associated with one type of infection than another it’s difficult to self-diagnose your infection as many of the symptoms you experience are very similar.
This is why we recommend visiting a GP if your symptoms do not clear within 3 days. They will better understand your symptoms and will be able to help diagnose you correctly and provide the best course of action.

Despite experiencing these symptoms, you don’t always have to jump to conclusions and assume that you have an ear infection. Many of these symptoms, such as hearing loss and a feeling of fullness, can also be associated with less severe conditions such as glue ear and an excess build-up of ear wax. Glue ear will typically clear itself within a few days to weeks but a build-up of excess ear wax will have to be removed by a trained specialist audiologist using micro-suction such as what we offer at North London.
