What are The Symptoms of Too Much Ear Wax?

Earwax is completely natural and healthy, and it has several important purposes when it comes to protecting our ears. But how do we know when we have too much ear wax? In this article, our audiologists discuss the symptoms of earwax build-up and when to look into having professional ear wax removal.

What are The Symptoms of Too Much Ear Wax? The warning signs of ear wax build-up include but are not limited to: earache or plugged ears, tinnitus (ringing in your ears), itching, and a sensation of fullness in the ear. An excess of ear wax can lead to uncomfortable and sometimes painful conditions, so there are several signs you should be conscious of to determine whether you have too much ear wax.

Read on to learn more about the symptoms of too much ear wax and how we can help if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

The Symptoms of Too Much Ear Wax

Earwax is important to protect the ear as it contains substances that create a natural barrier between our eardrums and the outside world. It helps to fight off infections that may enter our ears via foreign objects such as dust and dirt, which could damage the skin of the ear canal. Earwax also keeps the ear canal moisturised to prevent dryness and itchiness. But how do we know if we have too much earwax? Below we outline the symptoms that may occur if you have an excess build-up of ear wax.

Earache or Plugged Ears

An earwax build-up can be very painful, especially when it begins to harden, as it creates a blockage in the ear canal. One of the most common signs of too much ear wax is a full or partial loss of hearing. This type of hearing loss is called conductive hearing loss, as sound cannot pass from the outer ear to the inner ear because of a blockage or barrier, in this case, an excess build-up of ear wax. This build-up of wax can also be very painful.

Tinnitus (Buzzing or Ringing in the Ears)

Tinnitus is often caused by a loss of hearing. When the excess earwax creates a blockage, the partial loss of hearing can lead to developing tinnitus, an uncomfortable ringing or buzzing in the ear, as the brain tries to compensate for the lack of noise.

Tinnitus can also be a direct result of the pressure caused by the excess amount of ear wax inside your ear. The pressure from this wax blockage sends nerve signals from your inner and middle ear to your brain which reads these signals as noises such as ringing or buzzing.

Itching in the Ear

An excessive amount of earwax can cause an itching sensation inside your ear. You must avoid placing foreign objects inside to relieve that feeling. When you place objects such as your finger or a cotton swab inside your ear canal, you run the risk of introducing harmful bacteria into your ear and causing an infection. While it may seem that you are cleaning your ears, you are only removing a small percentage of the ear wax, the rest is being pushed further down into your ear canal causing a build-up of earwax.

Why Do I Produce Too Much Ear Wax?

Ear wax is perfectly healthy but there could be a number of reasons why you may be producing an excess amount of earwax. This can include the shape of your ear, as you may have naturally narrow or hairy ear canals. But it could also be because of your age – as you get older you are more likely to produce harder and drier wax.

However, the biggest cause for producing too much ear wax is repeatedly placing foreign objects in your ears, such as cotton buds, headphones, earplugs and hearing aids, as this pushes the wax down over a long period of time and creates a blockage.

How Do I Get Rid of Excess Ear Wax?

Whilst there are at-home methods available for ear wax removal, we recommend booking an appointment with one of our specialists if you notice one or more of the symptoms listed above. They are trained to use a specialised ear suction tube to gently dislodge and remove excess ear wax from the ear canal to ensure that all ear wax is safely and effectively removed.

This form of ear wax removal is called micro suction and is considered to be a much more modern and safer technique compared to that of syringing, as it offers our audiologists full view and control of the procedure.
